The actress Mary Tyler Moore would be hailed both by The New York Times and The Guardian for her work in challenging conventional female role stereotypes. That and the pitfalls of navigating womanhood in the late 20th and early 21st centuries.
Mary’s health had been on the decline for years after 1969. She was a recovering alcoholic and had been diagnosed with type 1 diabetes after a miscarriage. After the 2000s, things got especially bad, requiring multiple surgeries. Before she died at 80 years old after complications from contracting pneumonia, she had been heavily involved in diabetes research, advancing new treatments for those with the illness.
