Two Pennies Made 171 Years Apart

The value of money changes over time due to inflation. And as it turns out, its size also changes, as proven by these two pennies made 171 years apart. The larger one is believed to be a one-cent coin from 1847, and the other is your typical modern coin.
Knowing what goes into making a penny, this decrease in size makes more sense. Apparently, today’s pennies cost more to make than their face value. According to the History website, each penny costs 1.8 cents to manufacture. That’s also why the coin’s copper content declined over the years.
