Afghanistan

Afghanistan is home to women from many different ethnic groups. There are Pakhtuns (Pathans), the Uzbeks, the Tajiks, and the Hazaras. Unfortunately, political unrest and a state of constant war have made Afghanistan unsafe for its female population. Despite this, Afghani women have continued to persevere and stand tall in the face of adversity.
Most people will recall the stunning Afghan beauty captured by Steve McCurry in a refugee camp in Pakistan. Her picture made it to the cover of National Geographic Magazine. Her piercing green eyes shook the work and left it curious about her identity. Many years later, she was tracked and identified as Sharbat Gula.
