Silent Night, Sudden Flight

Under the cover of darkness at 11:30 p.m., the raft was finally seaworthy, and the daring escapees launched into the cold, treacherous waters. That was the last anyone saw or heard of them. The following morning, Alcatraz was jolted awake by the piercing sound of sirens; a startling alarm that an unbelievable breach had occurred.
As the island stirred, confusion rippled through the cells and corridors—escape from Alcatraz was deemed impossible. Yet, as the guards soon realized, the unimaginable had happened. The fortress, believed to be impenetrable, had been outsmarted by a group bold enough to challenge its confines.
