Believe it or not, John Anglin’s and his cohort’s daring escape wasn’t an isolated act of defiance at Alcatraz. Over the years, the prison witnessed numerous inmates risk everything for a shot at freedom. At least two dozen bold spirits made their attempts, facing the grim realities of their fortress prison.

While 23 of these desperate individuals were recaptured swiftly, not all shared the same fate. Tragically, six were met by the guards’ bullets, their hopes extinguished in an instant. Others who reached the chilling waters either succumbed to the depths or vanished without a trace, their stories etched into the cold currents of the bay.
