The Untold Story of Alcatraz’s Lost Prisoners and What REALLY Happened to Them

Owen Chase May 20, 2024

Alcatraz as a Crumbling Dungeon

The formidable reputation of Alcatraz as an inescapable prison was ironically undermined by its own deteriorating structure. Years of relentless exposure to saltwater had wreaked havoc on the prison’s infrastructure. Pipes corroded and walls weakened due to continuous leaks, making them vulnerable over time.

By the time the infamous escape was conceived, the prison’s foundation was compromised, with saltwater having eroded much of the cement. This deterioration unwittingly assisted the inmates, as they found it somewhat easier to fashion tunnels and openings through the softened barriers, turning the prison’s aging condition into an unintended ally in their quest for freedom.
