Harriet Beecher Stowe

The “Uncle Tom’s Cabin” novel by American author and philanthropist Harriet Beecher Stowe made such a significant impact on public opinion against slavery that it is listed as one of the factors that contributed to the American Civil War.

After becoming well-known for her critically lauded book, she published a number of other works, including “Oldtown Folks and Dred” as well as other essays, short stories, novels, and textbooks. Despite the fact that none of these were as well-known as “Uncle Tom’s Cabin,” she continued to enjoy widespread acclaim in the North. Up until the time of her death in 1896, Stowe kept writing and supporting social and political concerns.
