George Armstrong Custer

George Armstrong Custer was a cavalry soldier who distinguished himself throughout the American Civil War before leading his troops to their deaths in the Battle of the Little Bighorn. He achieved fame during his own life as a result of his striking looks, unquestionable physical prowess, and gift for self-promotion.

Because of his leadership qualities during the American Civil War, he was promoted to a general of volunteer groups at the age of 23, which was unusual for an army officer. He attained legendary status when, at Little Bighorn, known today as “Custer’s Last Stand,” he perished alongside his soldiers in the face of an overwhelming Indian army.
