Trillion Tons Of Ice Gone

The melting of the Antarctic ice is already well underway. According to Scientific American, the region has lost over 2.6 trillion tons of ice since the ‘90s. The main cause of this massive loss is the backing up of glaciers into the ocean.
The warmer waters then accelerate the rate at which the glacial masses deteriorate. Put simply; the ocean is destroying glaciers from the bottom up, causing more ice to spill onto the water. Scientists are still trying to pinpoint the exact source of warmer ocean currents, but they suspect climate change is the culprit.
