Actually, Dirk Nowitzki – like his father – wanted to be a handball player. But at the age of 13 he got basketball fever and became a playmaker at the regional club DJK Würzburg. The American basketball professional league quickly became aware of the 2.13 m tall exceptional talent. From 1999 to 2019 he played in the NBA for the Dallas Mavericks. In the 2016/2017 season, Nowitzki received a salary of 25 million US dollars, which made him the highest paid German athlete. In favor of the club, he agreed to a pay cut in his last two seasons – and he “only” earned $ 5 million. With a total fortune of 200 million euros, the cut should not have been too painful.
