Pompeii’s Purple Robe Error

Purple robes are everywhere in “Pompeii,” but this would have been quite daring in ancient Rome. Wearing purple was reserved for the emperor and a few high-ranking officials because producing the dye was incredibly expensive. Made from a rare species of sea snail, the color symbolized immense wealth and power.

Ordinary citizens, regardless of their wealth, wouldn’t have worn purple. The film’s depiction of many affluent characters in such robes is more about cinematic flair than historical accuracy, giving the movie a lavish feel that doesn’t align with the actual norms of Roman fashion. This choice adds a layer of opulence that enhances the visual spectacle.
