Gangs of New York: Firefighter Gear Mix-Up

Martin Scorsese’s 2002 epic “Gangs of New York” is set in the 1800s, making it puzzling to see firefighters wearing relatively modern gear and uniforms in the film. Firefighting as a profession did exist during that era, but the equipment and attire were vastly different. In the 1800s, firefighters typically wore woolen uniforms, leather helmets, and heavy boots, far from today’s advanced materials.
The first organized fire department in New York was established in 1865, but even then, their gear was rudimentary compared to modern standards. The choice to use contemporary equipment likely prioritizes safety during filming, but it creates a curious blend of old and new.
