As the name implies, this activity involves people venturing into decaying manmade structures, be it a shuttered hospital or office building, to take pictures or to simply explore what’s left.

The urbex community can be traced back to online forums where people drawn to abandoned places would congregate to exchange tips and new locations. That’s according to Matthew Christopher, creator of Abandoned America and a long-time urban explorer.
