Expeditionary Fighting Vehicle (EFV) – Cost: $24 Million

The Expeditionary Fighting Vehicle (EFV) was meant to replace the Amphibious Assault Vehicles (AAVs) of the ‘70s. Like its predecessor, it was designed to be operable from a Navy ship straight to the shore. But after years of development and funding, the manufacturing of EFVs was halted in 2011 due to mounting costs and poor reliability.
The EFV, which can transport 17 combat-ready Marines for inland battles, was expected to cost $24 million per tank. That said, it was feared that pushing through with the original order of 1,025 vehicles would have eaten up a huge chunk of the Marines’ ground budget.
