Las Vegas Was Once an Oasis

Believe it or not, “Las Vegas” actually translates to “The Meadows” in Spanish. A Spanish explorer named Rafael Rivera stumbled upon this desert oasis in 1829, and the hidden underground wells brought life to the parched land. These wells were essential for early settlers and helped the city grow into the vibrant oasis it is today.
Anyway, these lush meadows are long gone—thanks, air conditioning!—but the name stuck. So, when you’re enjoying the bright lights and excitement of the Strip, remember the hidden wells that gave Las Vegas its name and helped it thrive in the middle of the desert!
