For How Long Will Curiosity Last?

The Curiosity rover has spent more than 2,800 Sols (Martian days), captured more than 700,000 raw photos, and traversed over 14 miles as of 2020. A few more years are left in its power system before it begins to deteriorate. Until then, it will be able to continue obtaining samples, exploring the environment, and taking pictures with careful power management.

The radioisotope power system on the Curiosity rover is one of its most notable features. Particles of radioactive plutonium decay emit heat, which powers the apparatus. NASA has determined that this power source has outlived its design life expectancy of at least one Martian year or 687 days on Earth.
