Johnny Carson Retires on Another Show

When Johnny Carson retired from “The Tonight Show,” it was arguably the biggest late-night farewell ever. Even though Jay Leno was named Carson’s replacement, Carson made his final television appearance on David Letterman’s show.
The legendary talk show host was even allowed to sit in Letterman’s host chair. Carson took a seat, and the applause didn’t stop until he got back up. After the applause died, Carson shook his head and left the stage like a legend. At the end of the segment, Letterman exclaimed about such greatness and wished a little bit of that rubbed off on him.
