John Lennon and Yoko Ono

When you’re one of the most famous men alive, people expect you to do everything on a grand scale. And John Lennon and Yoko Ono’s 1969 wedding was iconic, encapsulated in John’s song “The Ballad of John and Yoko.”
The couple initially planned to marry in Paris but were thwarted by French authorities. They then flew to Gibraltar for a quick ceremony, returning to France within an hour. Their honeymoon was a “bed-in” for peace in Amsterdam, where they held a press conference from… their bed. Although we’ll never know the actual cost of the event, its simplicity and political statement made it a lasting symbol of love and activism.
