Women in Sports

The ’60s were also a decade of change for females in sports, and it contributed to their appeal. It was a time when female sports became more popular, but it was challenging. Women were encouraged to be athletic, primarily to maintain their feminine physique and to socialize with men.
Although females with athletic builds were considered attractive, their sports still lagged behind males. Despite the challenges, female athletes have long proved their worth. One such example is Margaret Abbott, who won the golf competition at the 1900 Paris Olympics, becoming the first American woman to win an Olympic gold medal.
