America Ferrera may not be your typical blond-haired, blue-eyed stunner, but she’s definitely not the ‘fea’ her Ugly Betty character is. Thus, she needed to don a wig, snap-on braces, and fake eyebrows to play the role that put her on the map. That doesn’t mean that she couldn’t relate to Betty at all, though.

Herself a Latina who grew up in white America, Ferrera had many fish-out-of-water experiences during her childhood. So, she could empathize with Betty feeling out of place at her trendy workplace. The Golden Globe-winning actress represents her Latin roots in her work today in the shows Superstore and Gentefied.
