Pocahontas

She may have earned the nickname Pocahontas over the course of her life, but she was born as Amonute and known as Matoaka. According to Smithsonian magazine, the nickname either means “playful one” or “ill-behaved child.” For anyone who didn’t know her, Pocahontas was a native American woman who belonged to the clan of the Powhatan people.

She was mostly known for the interactions with the Jamestown colony, her attempts to encourage unity in the Powhatans and the English colonists, and also saving the life of Captain John Smith. She did all of it in the span of 20-21 years, after which she died of illness.
