Stepping Back Was the Hardest Part

Hana rushed into the emergency room, her voice cutting through the noise as she called for help. Relief washed over her when a veterinarian appeared, calm and focused, his eyes locking onto the odd little creatures they carried. He instructed them to place the animals on exam tables, already assessing their condition.
Just as Hana moved to stay close, the vet gently stopped her. He needed space. She wanted to protest, to hover and make sure they were safe, but she paused. It wasn’t easy, but she stepped back. With one last glance, she followed Peter out to the waiting area, heart heavy, mind racing with what-ifs.
