They Rescued Them All… Almost

Hana held the small creature close, feeling its tiny heartbeat against her palm. She found a soft patch of ground nearby and made a resting spot, using her jacket to keep the rescued animals warm. Peter continued working below, each trip bringing up another frightened little body. Relief built slowly as the group grew.
Finally, after what felt like hours, the last one reached the surface. There were five in total, each blinking slowly, unsure of what had happened. Hana and Peter exchanged a quiet glance. They could carry two each, but one would be left behind. The joy of rescue faded into uncertainty. They had saved them—but not solved everything.
