A Free Ride To New York City

In Bethel, the Woodstock Festival was held 110 miles away from New York City. So you can imagine how those traveling from out of state had to find the event’s location and find their way back again.

Hitchhiking was normal back in the ’60s, especially for many who did not own their own vehicles. The Chicago Tribune reported that best friends Mark Rice and John Davenport started their 250-mile journey to the concert by hitching a ride. However, once the traffic hit a standstill, they had to walk the last 10-mile leg of their journey.
