Melanie Safka Sang To Beautiful People

Folk singer Melanie Safka had not been in the limelight for too long before performing at Woodstock in ’69. Her big break came through music executive producer Artie Ripp when he introduced her to festival organizer Artie Kornfeld. He took a risk and sent her to the concert to perform.

On that Friday night, her time on stage was around 30 minutes, and she performed without accompaniment, the only woman to do so that day. She appeared alone wearing a red tunic and pants and gave an incredible show, with many calling her “The First Lady of Woodstock.”
