Loud Beeping from Self-Driving Cars Sparks Outrage Among Californians

Helen Hayward Jun 21, 2025

In Santa Monica, California, futuristic transportation is losing its captivating appeal. Once a novelty, Waymo’s driverless cars have now become a source of daily frustration for residents.

What started as quiet curiosity has turned into vocal outrage over the nonstop beeping echoing through local neighborhoods.

Beeping That Never Stops

Waymo, a self-driving ride-hailing service, has set up shop in several states, including California. In Santa Monica, however, locals say the company’s fleet isn’t just taking rides—it’s taking peace and quiet with it. Thanks to regulations requiring electric vehicles to audibly beep while reversing, residents now wake to the sound of vehicles backing out of charging stations at all hours.

The cars beep as they reverse. They beep when navigating tight turns. They even beep while avoiding each other in the company’s lot. Morning or night, weekdays or weekends, the noise doesn’t let up.

According to reports, Santa Monica residents have had enough. One neighbor, Darius Boorn, summed up the feeling: “I thought it was cool, and then those freaking noises started. And then I thought, ‘Oh no, this can’t be happening.’”

Local Tensions Hit a Breaking Point

The tension escalated when residents began staging blockades to stop Waymo’s cars from entering their charging facility. In some cases, people used traffic cones, parked cars, and even their own bodies to prevent the vehicles from entering. In response, Waymo made several calls to the police.

Residents had to start protesting before the city itself found out about Waymo’s pricing business. That’s because Waymo had subleased the parking lot from another company and quietly plugged into the existing infrastructure. For city officials, this was a surprise—and a problem.

Santa Monica Mayor Pro Tem Caroline Torosis explained the challenge: “The issue here is that they are sounds that the vehicles are required to make. I’m totally sympathetic to the quiet enjoyment of property, so we’re trying to get this under control.”

Attempts to Fix the Problem Fall Short

Waymo hasn’t ignored the complaints. In response to the backlash, the company limited staff hours, installed bamboo barriers to buffer the noise, and even swapped out their vacuums for quieter models. Still, residents say the changes barely scratch the surface.

Many believe that government rules are the cause of the problem. Current rules require electric vehicles to produce a sound while reversing to alert pedestrians—similar to delivery trucks. While intended as a safety measure, in dense residential neighborhoods, this law is creating a serious quality-of-life issue.

Despite Waymo’s outreach and adjustments, the constant noise continues to disturb locals. Boorn, still frustrated, dismissed the company’s efforts bluntly: “C’mon, it’s lipstick on a pig, baby.”

Seeking Long-Term Solutions

Santa Monica officials say they’re in contact with state agencies in hopes of addressing the issue. Their goal is to ensure technological progress doesn’t come at the expense of resident well-being.

Mayor Pro Tem Torosis made that clear, noting, “We need to make sure that as we have some of these new business practices coming into the city, while not stifling innovation, that we’re putting the needs of our residents here in front.”

Waymo, for its part, released a statement reiterating its commitment to community dialogue. A spokesperson said the company remains “in ongoing conversation with the City’s Department of Transportation” and plans to continue adjusting its practices to better serve neighborhoods.

A Future That Still Needs Tuning

While autonomous technology has shown promise in transforming transportation, the Santa Monica situation highlights a clear reality: innovation must go hand in hand with integration. Communities deserve a say in how these technologies impact their daily lives.

As the story unfolds, the public debate grows louder than the beeping. And until better solutions arrive, the sound of progress might just be a little too noisy for comfort.

Innovation continues to move forward, but real harmony comes when tech listens to people too. Santa Monica just might be the wake-up call companies need.
